My DIY home security camera system consits of Hikvision and Reolink cameras connected to a QNAP TS-253A NAS that acts as an NVR. back to menu ↑ What’s the basic principle? We will look at the reverse process in a later blog post. In this guide, I am going to focus on how to get Surveillance Station to talk to HS3. Throw in geo-fencing and you have a super-smart autonomous CCTV system! So I can arm the cameras at night or when I am away so that I get notifications only when I am not at home.
I can sync the cameras to my house mode. When the Neo Coolcam Door/Window sensor attached to my mailbox detects new mail, Surveillance Station will start recording the front door camera.
When the doorbell is pushed, Surveillance Station will start recording the front door camera. Whenever motion is detected by external PIR sensors, my smart home hub can ask my NVR to start recording the camera in that area. Whenever motion is detected, my smart home hub sends me email snapshots of all the cameras (not just the one that detected motion). Whenever motion is detected, tablet devices activate and switch to the camera view until the motion stops. Whenever motion is detected, certain lights turn on at that camera location. There are several things I can now do thanks to the left hand knowing what the right is up to: But there was a problem – the two systems didn’t talk to each other and were oblivious of what the other half was up to. Later on I added a smart home hub to create my DIY home automation system. I first started off building my DIY home security camera system. Hold on…why should they talk to each other? How does the QNAP Surveillance Station motion detection work?. Hold on…why should they talk to each other?. I think there’s room for inference here based on the reported control pairs / states, but I was surprised that even though there is a concept of ‘device types’, most of the devices I tested all reported ‘generic’ types. The other thing I recall seeing is that the data modeling being somewhat weak and would be a challenge in dashboards where we use more standardized classifications. And it seems like big chunks of the community are still on HS4 (even though many have paid for HS4 licenses, but not yet migrated). For example, there are data structure and API differences between HS3 and HS4 that would potentially warrant only supporting HS4 (at least at first release). I did some prototyping work on this a few months back - I’d have to revisit my notes for the details, but I do recall there being some challenges in that initial analysis.
I can’t commit to the timing, but the fact that it has risen to the top of the list certainly helps in getting it prioritized for further review / analysis. Any idea if homeseer integration is a possibility within the next year ?
